CUCF Release Paths

The Central Utah Correctional Facility is a UDC state prison in Gunnison. It may confine a person sentenced in a Grand County court after commitment to the Utah Department of Corrections. At that stage, the county's live jail list no longer controls release status. UDC tracks legal status and placement, while the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole makes parole decisions.

Leaving CUCF can mean movement within UDC, transport to the Utah State Correctional Facility for release processing, parole to the community, placement at a community correctional center, or expiration of the prison sentence. The first two events are not the same as full community release. Even after physical release, parole may continue until the Board terminates it or the sentence expires.

Confirm a CUCF Release

Use the UDC Offender Search rather than Grand County's current jail roster. The state tool accepts a UDC number or name. A name query needs at least one letter from both the first and last name. Results cover current UDC inmates, probationers, and parolees. They do not cover an unsentenced county detainee, and someone whose UDC sentence has fully ended may no longer appear.

Identity comes first. Compare offender number, name, date of birth, committing court, and case details. Then read legal status separately from location. A “parolee” result indicates release from prison, while a confinement-facility entry indicates institutional placement. The observed detail label “Release Date/Type” can be blank or not applicable, so it should not be converted into a guessed projected date.

1. Collect the complete name and UDC offender number if known.
2. Search the number before trying name variants.
3. Open the matching UDC result and compare identity, legal status, location, and placement.
4. Search the Board's hearings and decisions for the order behind parole or review.
5. After the expected date, check UDC status again for the actual custody change.
6. Request a termination, expiration, or discharge record if current-only search coverage has ended.

CUCF Releases Through USCF

UDC's Release Day instructions create an important distinction for CUCF families. State paroles and releases are processed on Tuesdays at USCF. UDC says Release Fair participants from CUCF and USCF arrive at the USCF Release Building at 9 a.m. Thus a person housed in Gunnison may be physically released in Salt Lake City rather than at the prison where the sentence was served.

People without a ride may be transported to a nearby UTA TRAX station by UDC staff or a volunteer and released last. When the release plan calls for a community correctional center, UDC provides transport. Those details concern UDC custody. They are not Grand County Jail hours, a promise that every order will be carried out on the same date, or a reason to travel without confirmation from the case manager.

Historical proof is better sought through UDC's records channel with the offender number and committing case. Ask for the exact release, parole, termination, or expiration record rather than a general status summary.

A Board order and UDC record serve different roles. The Board order shows its decision and any future parole or review date. The UDC record shows legal status, placement, and the operational information the agency keeps. When a result vanishes because the person is no longer under UDC supervision, a written request can produce more durable proof than repeated searches.

CUCF Board Release Evidence

Utah's indeterminate sentence does not yield one release date through simple arithmetic. The sentencing court imposes a statutory range. The Board schedules an original hearing, examines the case, and may grant parole, order a rehearing, defer action, or later rescind a future release. Utah Code §77-27-9 generally restricts release before the minimum term unless specified findings follow a full hearing. Offense-specific and mandatory-minimum rules can also control.

The Board's public search accepts first and last name, offender number, or a date range. Results may show an upcoming hearing and prior decisions. Read each order in its own terms. A parole date is not a termination date. An original hearing is not a promise of release. A rescission review can change an earlier future date before the prisoner leaves.

UDC may also list a Board hearing or rehearing date and parole or expiration information among public case fields. Preserve the labels exactly. If a CUCF record and Board order appear to conflict, contact the responsible agency instead of selecting whichever date seems earlier.

Grand County to CUCF Trail

A sound Grand County record trail begins with the local booking number and court case. The Grand County Jail release or transfer sheet can show that county custody ended through commitment or transport. The court docket supplies the judgment and sentence. The UDC offender number then connects the person to CUCF or another state confinement site, and the Board order documents the parole decision.

These steps prevent two common mistakes. First, disappearance from the Grand County roster does not show that the person entered the community. Second, departure from CUCF does not always mean the person has no state restraint. The person may have moved to USCF for processing, entered a community correctional center, or started parole under UDC Adult Probation and Parole.

The sequence is straightforward: county transfer, state placement, Board action, physical release, community supervision, and final termination.

CUCF Hearing and Release Calendar

CUCF has a distinct Board hearing rhythm even though most physical releases are processed at USCF. The Board's Join a Live Hearing page lists Gunnison hearings on Tuesdays. Since March 17, 2025, the public broadcasts are audio-only, and the individual search result identifies the hearing location. A hearing at CUCF is a review event, not proof that release will occur at CUCF or on that day.

The Board describes original, rehearing, rescission, parole-violation, evidentiary, redetermination, paper-review, and special-attention proceedings. Each can lead to a different order. An original hearing begins Board review. A rehearing sets another review point. A rescission process can take away a date before release. A parole-violation matter concerns someone who had already entered community supervision and later returned to the Board's custody process.

For a Grand County case, search by offender number and save the published order. Then compare the order with UDC's current legal status and the centralized Release Day route. If the order lists a future parole date, check again after that date for the operational change. If no current UDC result remains, request the later termination or expiration record instead of treating disappearance as proof.

This layered check also guards against a pickup mistake. Gunnison may be the confinement and hearing site, while Salt Lake City is the release-processing site. Only an individual UDC instruction should support an exception.
